Homemade Flour Tortillas

Homemade Flour Tortillas are very near and dear to my heart. It’s the food my mom showed me how to make. My mom was the best cook, one thing I regret is not learning everything she knew.

She showed me how to make them without measurement just by feel. The first few years after she showed me I was able to make them that way. Once I got married it seems like I have completely forgotten how to make them, they would not come out the same.

After many trials and errors I have figured out the perfect measurements for Homemade Flour Tortillas. They come out perfect each time, no need to buy them at the store anymore.

Description

These tortillas are very easy to make. Once you try them you will not buy storebought anymore. The flavor does not even compare.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoon lard (or shortening)
  • 1 1/2 cup water

Instructions

  1. In a bowl mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add lard or shortening and with your hands mix it in until it resembles crumbles.
  3. Add water and mix until it becomes a ball of dough.
  4. Knead for about 5-8 mins until it becomes elastic.
  5. Divide into 2 inch balls.
  6. Rub a little lard or shorten into hands and rub ball the dough and place back into the bowl. (Do not skip this step because this prevents them from sticking to each other).
  7. Let dough rest for about 10 mins.
  8. Heat a flat cast iron skillet till it’s really hot.
  9. On a floured surface flatten dough into disks with a rolling pin.
  10. Place dough onto hot cast iron skillet, once it bubbles, flip and bubbles on the other side it’s done.
  11. Repeat until all are done.
